What Is the Cannes Film Festival?

Held each May on the French Riviera, the Cannes Film Festival (Festival de Cannes) is widely regarded as the most prestigious and glamorous film event in the world. It serves as a marketplace for international cinema, a launching pad for art house films, and a cultural institution that has shaped the direction of world cinema for decades.

Unlike the Oscars — which celebrate films that have already been released — Cannes primarily premieres films, often providing the first major public screening of some of the year's most important works.

A Brief History

The festival was founded in 1946 as an alternative to the politically compromised Venice Film Festival, which had been used as a propaganda platform during the fascist era. From its inception, Cannes positioned itself as a celebration of artistic freedom in cinema. Over the decades, it has premiered landmark films and launched the careers of some of cinema's greatest filmmakers.

The Main Sections of the Festival

In Competition (La Compétition)

The heart of Cannes. A selection of roughly 20 films compete for the festival's top prizes, judged by an international jury chaired by a prominent filmmaker or artist. These are typically prestige films from established auteurs or bold emerging voices.

Un Certain Regard

A parallel competition section that highlights bold, distinctive, and formally innovative films — often from newer directors or less commercially prominent filmmakers. Many future masters of cinema have premiered here first.

Out of Competition

High-profile films screened at Cannes without competing for prizes. Major blockbusters and anticipated mainstream films often screen here — a chance for the festival to attract global attention and star power without the films needing to meet the artistic criteria of the competition.

Midnight Screenings

Genre films — particularly horror, thrillers, and action — that celebrate cinema's more populist side. These screenings often generate tremendous buzz and enthusiasm from the crowd.

The Directors' Fortnight & Critics' Week

Independent parallel sections run by separate organizations. The Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Cinéastes) has an especially celebrated history of championing radical and unconventional cinema.

The Awards: Understanding the Palme d'Or and Beyond

Award What It Recognizes
Palme d'Or Best film in competition — the festival's highest honor
Grand Prix Second-highest prize; often given to bold, unconventional films
Jury Prize Third-place prize in competition; recognizes distinctive merit
Best Director Outstanding directorial achievement
Best Actor / Best Actress Performance prizes
Caméra d'Or Best first film, across all sections

Cannes as a Film Market

Alongside the festival runs the Marché du Film (Film Market) — one of the world's largest film industry trade events. Thousands of buyers, sellers, producers, and distributors attend to acquire films for their territories, greenlight co-productions, and negotiate deals. Many films that premiere at Cannes find their international distribution here.

Why Cannes Matters for the Film Industry

  • Distribution deals: A Cannes premiere — especially a prize win — can transform a film's distribution prospects worldwide.
  • Awards season momentum: Films that win at Cannes frequently become Oscar contenders in the international feature or best picture categories.
  • Cultural credibility: For filmmakers, a Cannes selection is a career-defining stamp of artistic recognition.
  • Global visibility: The festival generates enormous press coverage, giving selected films an international platform unavailable elsewhere.

How to Follow Cannes as a Film Fan

You don't need to be in the south of France to follow along. Many films that premiere at Cannes receive theatrical releases in the following months. Following film critics and outlets that send correspondents to the festival — including trade publications like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and Screen International — is the best way to track which films are generating the strongest responses and buzz.
